Triple Crown of Running Second Leg News And Updates

The second “leg” of the Louisville Triple Crown of Running presented by Novo Nordisk, the Rodes City Run 10K, happens on Saturday, March 8. Now that the deadline for mail-in and walk-in registration has passed, individuals can still register online through midnight (EST) on Saturday, March 1. The early fee is $30 (plus active.com fee). After Saturday’s deadline, you may only register at the Rodes City Run Late Registration/Packet Pickup at Louisville Slugger Field on March 7 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The late fee is $45. You may also register and pick up your packets on Race Day, March 8 at the Fifth Street Parking Garage. The Race Day fee is $60. Go to rodescityrun.com for registration and race information.

The first leg of the Louisville Triple Crown of Running, the Anthem 5K Fitness Classic that ran on February 22 had a total registration of 7,099, with 6,054 finishers. The Rodes City Run 10K is now at less than 6,000, with another 500 to 800 expected to register online this week, during the Late Registration Friday, March 7 and Race Day Registration on March 8. Normally, entrants must complete all three events in the series to receive a bonus Louisville Triple Crown of Running t-shirt. However, due to some traffic issues at the first race, organizers are awarding credit toward the first leg to anyone who registered for the Anthem 5K. Racers must still register and complete the final two legs to receive the coveted, complimentary Triple Crown shirt.

The Rodes City Run 10K and the other Louisville Triple Crown of Running races in the series are again using a state-of-the-art timing system from ChronoTrack. This new innovation allows for the use of disposable tags, called B-Tags. Because the B-Tag is mounted on the back of the runner’s bib, it is virtually invisible to the participant and requires no special pre or post-race handling. The disposable B-Tag ensures high accuracy, fast results and simplicity of use for races of all sizes. The Triple Crown series races are some of the first in the nation to use the B-Tag timing system. The 2014 Rodes City Run 10K will feature Kid’s Fun Runs, presented by Chick-fil-A and CafePress, in the Jefferson Community Technical College lot on race day, March 8 at approximately 10:00 a.m. The fee is $5 per child. Kids receive a special t-shirt, bib number and other “goodies.” There will also be an inflatable bouncer and slide for the kids to enjoy while waiting for the races to begin. The Fun Run races are organized by River City Races.

The Rodes City Run 10K is going “green” again this year, replacing the nearly 30,000 water bottles with biodegradable cups at all four water stations on the course, including the Finish area in the JCTC lot. Pure Tap water, 36,000 cups, hookups and labor are all provided by the Louisville Water Company. The Water stations are sponsored by (#1) Signature Healthcare, (#2) Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, (#3) Stock Yards Bank & Trust and (#4 -Finish) Novo Nordisk/Anthem/Papa John’s. Runner’s times will be communicated at the finish line through Text, Email, Facebook and Twitter to anyone who signs up for the service, so friends and family can get the same info. All Xact messages feature the race name, runner name, time at location, pace and projected finish time. Anyone can track the results of any participant. This feature is provided by Rodes For Him & For Her.

On June 1, 2013, The Louisville Triple Crown of Running donated a record $190,126 to the WHAS Crusade for Children on behalf of the running community. The three-race series has contributed over $1.2 million to the Crusade for Children since 2002.

Two Trinity students recognized as National Merit Finalists

Trinity High School seniors Thomas Beyerle and Blake Merkley are being recognized as Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a test that serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry/participation requirement. Beyerle and Merkley were among the 15,000 Semifinalists.

In early February, Semifinalists were notified that they advanced to Finalist standing. High school principals were notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist.

All winners of Merit Scholarship awards (Merit Scholar designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based upon their abilities, skills and accomplishments. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist’s academic record; information about the school’s curricula and grading system; two sets of test scores; the high school’s official written recommendation; information about the student’s activities and leadership; and the Finalist’s essay.

Trinity’s Sam Stockton Named Gatorade Kentucky Boys Soccer Player of The Year

In its 29th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, announced Trinity High School junior Sam Stockton as its 2013-14 Gatorade Kentucky Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

A Trinity soccer player has won the award three of the last five years. Lepe Seetane (Class of 2010) was named the 2009-10 Gatorade Kentucky Boys Soccer Player of the Year and Chris Hubbard (Class of 2013) received the award for 2012-13.

The award, which recognizes outstanding athletic skill, academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Stockton as Kentucky’s best boys high school soccer player. Stockton is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year to be announced in May.

Stockton, a 5-foot-5-inch, 145-pound midfielder scored 16 goals and passed for 15 assists last season, leading the Shamrocks (21-3-1) to the state championship game. An All-Region Four selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, Stockton was a first team All-State honoree and a member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Olympic Development Program team. He concluded his junior year with career totals of 27 goals and 66 assists.

Stockton has maintained an “A” average in the classroom. A devoted member of his church community, Stockton has volunteered with the Kosair Children’s Hospital Foundation and as a member of the Trinity Ambassador program.

As part of Stockton’s honor, he will receive a recognition package containing a trophy and a formal letter.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball and boys and girls track and field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade high school sports leadership team in partnership with USA TODAY High School Sports, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
