Bugs Bunny And The Looney Tunes Gang Featured at Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory

There’s something funny going on at Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. A special exhibition entitled “Play Ball, Doc! – The Art of Warner Bros. Cartoons” featuring legendary Looney Tunes’ characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester and Tweety opens April 5.

The exhibit includes more than 70 original drawings, paintings and related objects used in the making of Warner Bros. cartoons from the 1930s through the 1960s. The exhibit shows, step-by-step, how animated films were painstakingly drawn by hand, a process now performed by computers.

“This bright and lively exhibition showcases original, remarkable cartoon artwork and the lasting impact these cartoons have had on American culture,” said Anne Jewell, executive director of Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. “Warner Bros. and Louisville Slugger are classic American brands. It’s fitting for them to come together to produce such a fun experience.” The museum hosted a smaller version of the exhibit 10 years ago.

A special supplement for the show created exclusively for Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory spotlights original artwork from classic baseball-themed cartoons produced by Warner Bros. Like Bugs Bunny and his gang, baseball is an important and beloved cultural staple. The sport’s balance of good-natured fun and intense competition provided an ideal setup for the antics and battles of the Looney Tunes lot. The exhibit includes interactive elements for guests, such as a virtual home run derby with Bugs Bunny and fun photo opportunities.

Since 1930, the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons of Warner Bros. have entertained audiences of all ages with their wit and sophistication. Originally shown in movie theatres, the Warner Bros. cartoons developed new audiences with the rise of television in the 1950s.

The Warner Bros. studio’s rise to prominence on the animation front was confirmed with a People magazine poll, which named Bugs Bunny as “Best puppet or cartoon character,” as well as a TV Guide survey which named Bugs as the “Greatest Cartoon Character of All Time.”

Louisville Chef Pays Debt to Lexington Chef After Local Team Loses in Sweet 16

When University of Kentucky knocked out the University of Louisville in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game, AZUR Restaurant & Patio Executive Chef Jeremy Ashby won big, too. He bet Louisville Bristol Bar & Grille chef Bill Lynch an afternoon serving regular patrons and his special guest, former UK star Kenny “Sky” Walker, a special fried bird meal wearing Kentucky Blue. Thursday, Lynch made good on the bet. Wearing a Kentucky Final Four t-shirt, Lynch served Walker Ashby’s bourbon fried chicken, or “cardinal” as it was called for the day, in honor of Louisville’s mascot. Forcing a smile, Lynch complimented Walker’s alma mater and told him next year maybe it would go the other way.

As part of the bet, the chefs also raised nearly $500 for Blessings in a Backpack, a Kentucky-based charity that provides food for elementary school children who may otherwise have little or no food to eat on the weekends. The money will be split between schools the charity serves in Lexington and Louisville.

Feat of Louisville Partners With Field Elementary For Autism Awareness Month

The Autism Friendly Community Initiative coordinated by Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT) of Louisville is partnering with Field Elementary School to raise local Autism Awareness.

On Tuesday, April 8 at 10 a.m., Field Elementary students presented to their school information they have learned about Autism Spectrum Disorders and how they can help those students facing the challenges of Austism every day. Children with developmental disabilities are often not accepted or bullied in schools, but through awareness, FEAT and Field Elementary hope to change that in all schools.

Several members of the Autism Friendly Community Initiative were in attendance. “This is the first year that AFC has partnered with one of our elementary schools, and we certainly hope it will not be our last,” said Karla Gibbs, Director of FEAT of Louisville. “With Autism numbers on the rise, we must seek to raise awareness in our neighborhoods and schools. We must stand together as a community and speak for these children and families who faces the reality of Autism every day.

Talon Winery Competes in Final Four

Talon Winery is chosen by Wine Spectator Magazine’s own final four to represent Kentucky. As the Final Four men’s basketball teams competed for the top spot in basketball last weekend, wineries from Kentucky, Wisconsin, Florida and Connecticut also competed – for best wine.

Talon Winery sits on a beautiful 300-acre farm in Lexington, Ky., right in the heart of the Bluegrass State, home of the eight-time NCAA Men’s Basketball National Champion Kentucky Wildcats. Talon is surrounded by the lush greenery of horse farms which have been home to Kentucky Derby Thoroughbreds Real Quiet, Aptitude and Empire Maker. Talon’s tasting room, established in 1999, is located in the original historic farmhouse which was built in 1790, two years before Kentucky became a state separate from Virginia. Just down I-64, eight miles outside Louisville (home of the 2013 NCAA Champs, the Louisville Cardinals) Talon’s Shelby County tasting room, established in 2009, welcomes travelers from all over the state and beyond to enjoy a complete selection of Talon’s wines.

Voted Kentucky’s Best Grape Grower in 2007, just one year after accepting the position as Talon’s winemaker and vineyard manager, Kerry Jolliffe has continued to meticulously oversee the vines to ensure he always starts with only the finest fruit. Even though Kerry is always focused on the wine’s finish, he knows preparation and an eye for detail all season long will put his wines in the winner’s circle. Whether training Kentucky Derby winners, developing a championship basketball team, or making award-winning wines, every detail and every day is equally important.

For the second year in a row, UPS will fly one of its Boeing 767-300 aircraft in the Thunder Over Louisville Air Show. While all eyes will be on the smooth-flying, fuel-efficient UPS brown tail during the air show, the story behind the scenes will be about honoring United States Military Veterans.
